A few weeks ago I posted my classification of all 551 questions in Bitcoin Stack Exchange's wallet-recovery tag. The number that surprised people: only 5 askers had lost a seed word. 429 said they had their complete backup and still couldn't rebuild their wallet. Several people asked what those 429 were actually failing on. Fair question. Here's what I can say and what I can't. First, the caveat, because it's real: this counts questions on a forum, not real-world outcomes. Someone who lost their seed entirely knows there is nothing to ask and doesn't post. So 5/551 does not mean losing words is rare in the world — it means it's rare among people who still have something to try."
