A lot of the comments were about personal responsibility. Fair enough. I made the mistake that allowed the theft to happen. I don’t try to make that smaller than it was. But another part of the discussion stayed with me. If Bitcoin was supposed to free us from banks, governments and intermediaries, how does it make sense to call the police or go to court when something goes wrong? That question took me back to a scene I wrote about in my book, . I was sitting in a Guardia Civil waiting room in Spain after reporting the theft. I still agree with that. But five years later, I think there is another question underneath it. When many of us became interested in Bitcoin in the early years, the hope was not only that it would exist outside the banking system. The hope was that an actual peer-to-peer economy would grow around it. You would earn bitcoin, spend bitcoin, accept bitcoin, and pass it on. The system would become less dependent on banks and fiat, not more. That part never really happened. Bitcoin survived. It became enormously valuable. It became mainstream. But much of the economy around it now runs through centralized exchanges, custodians, KYC, banks, ETFs and regulated on- and off-ramps. The blockchain is still decentralized. But the world around it increasingly isn’t. So I keep coming back to this: Can Bitcoin still fulfil its original peer-to-peer vision when so much of the economy around it now depends on centralized institutions?
