Today I want to talk about some really, really good news for BIP110, this temporary soft fork, which you can read more about in this link, which I'll put in the description notes below. This headline from yesterday, Bitcoin mining giant Foundry asks miners to vote on BIP110 soft fork. This is significant because Foundry controls a really significant portion of the hash rate currently somewhere between 25 and 30% of the hash rate. So that's how many blocks they produce on average. According to this article, under Foundry's process, each vote, basically they're going to let the people who own the mining rigs who are pointing the hash to their mining pool, they're going to let them vote whether they want to signal or not for BIP 110, whether they want BIP, whether they want Foundry as a pool, as a whole to signal for BIP 110. So according to this article from Bitcoin magazine. Under Foundry's process, each vote carries weight based on an account's average 10-day hash rate on the pool between July 6th and July 15th. Foundry said it will signal based on the majority of hash rate weighted votes across the signaling period, which it expects to run through early August at block 961632. That's when mandatory signaling for the miners kicks in for BIP110. The company's starting position is no. It said that until yes votes cross 51% of voting hash rate. Foundry signals no with all of its blocks. A crossing of that threshold switches the pool to yes with all of its blocks. You can see the actual email here if this is indeed real. It's sort of surreal that Bugle News is the only one posting this, but here's a snapshot of the email that Foundry has sent to its hashers. Now why I think this is such good news. Our enemies have been telling us that no one cares about BIP 110 and that the large mining pools don't even know that it exists. So if this email is authentic, again, if this email is authentic, then we now know the following. We know that Foundry knows about Bitcoin 10. We know that Foundry has done the work to review the code and that Foundry is now ready to activate Bitcoin 10. And that means that Foundry, that and pool and other large mining pools, Bitcoin mining pools that don't trust each other have to start paying attention now and are getting ready to activate Bitcoin 10, assuming they hadn't already done this. And so now the game theory really kicks in. Now Chinese ant pool won't be able to sleep well at night knowing that American Foundry might use the soft fork as a way of hurting ant pool and stealing market share. Basically, prisoner's dilemma game theory just kicked in. And you can tell that this is significant because the opponents of Bitmex 110 are freaking out. People like Jonathan Beer at Bitmex Research doing clown emojis. Foundry Services announces an absolute car crash of a policy on Bitmex 110. they're very much against BitMEX research is very much against BIP110, but it seems fair to me. It seems like a good idea to let Hashers vote on this thing. Knuts von Holm had one of the first posts on this, and I think it's quite good and worth reading in full. Why Foundry asking its hashmongers to vote means BIP110 is probably winning. They just asked their miners how the pool should signal on BIP110. Votes weighted by a 10-day hash rate. According to Foundry, majority rules. Over 51% yes, they signal with 100% of blocks, otherwise silence. I don't believe them. This is why there are basically two ways to stop BIP110. One was a counter fork or URSF, user rejected or user resisted soft fork. This is not happening simply because our opponents don't have the support for something like this or the coordination. The other one was for the big miners to simply ignore it, to ignore us, BIP110 node runners, which they could have easily done if the movement was small enough. But as soon as one of the big mining pools starts suspecting that another big one will signal the prisoner's dilemmas scenario starts kicking in. Ignoring makes no sense anymore since this is now actually risks losing blocks and losing the associated block rewards. By asking their hash mongers to vote, their hashers to vote, foundries signaling to the other big pools that they're ready to flip the bit start signaling with their blocks in mind blocks, meaning that the other pools are are now incentivized to flip it because of the knowledge that foundry might. The cascading dominoes of the red button have thus already begun to fall, and as we talked about in a previous video, the way you want to survive, the easiest way to survive is you just press the red button and you know that you're going to survive, whereas if you press the blue button, I'll put a link to this video in the description notes below, but if you press the blue button, you can basically be wiped out by the red button. It's another sort of thought experiment. Canute goes on to write, given this information, it no longer makes any sense for any pool including Foundry itself, not to press the red button, in other words to start signaling for BIP-110, since all that can lead from this point on is more risk. Ignoring is no longer an option. I think that's well said. Now there are some potential problems and objections, and I think there's a fundamental problem with the framing of how Foundry is talking about this. So number one, this email may be fake. This may not be an actual Foundry email. Bitcoin Magazine and Bugle are run by spammers and scammers who apparently hate VIP 110. Again, that's just my opinion. Number two, we have no way of verifying the results of any vote, and thus we're forced to trust Foundry, which may itself be a bad actor. And your default attitude to all large regulated Bitcoin companies, and all large regulated companies in general, should be to distrust because that's what adversarial thinking is all about. Because large corporations are basically forced to do whatever the state tells them to do. Objection number three, the default is set to no Bip110 and so if hashers don't read their emails, they may not know about the vote or even care if they do read their emails. And again, hashers don't really get to decide these things. Node runners do. Most importantly, though, I think the framing is wrong because neither Foundry nor Hashers, it's Hashmongers, get to decide the rules of Bitcoin. So personally, I don't care whether or not Foundry approves of Bip110. Bip110, whether Foundry activates it or not. Bip110 is going to activate on my node regardless of what any large regulated corporation or government thinks about it. And I'm not the only one. All you guys are out there. Almost 15,000 Bitcoiners running RDS right here, which is Bip110. And so I would conclude that if this announcement from Foundry is real, then the odds of Bip110 succeeding just skyrocketed. Meanwhile, from the other side from our opponents, from the enemies of Bip110, just hysterical shrieking on X, zero real resistance, zero URSF, user rejected software or user resisted software. They just don't have the support and they don't have the coordination. So in conclusion, I would say we haven't won yet. We should definitely not be complacent. We need to keep getting the word out about Bip110 running Bip110 nodes and trying to mine Bip110 blocks. But this is very, very good news indeed. And it's a reminder that Bitcoin clubs control the network and can make giant mining pools wake up and take notice which is wonderful to see.
