The debt was enormous, so Parliament looked across the ocean and decided the colonies would help pay it down. If you were a farmer in back country, the Stamp Act did not touch your life. hit lawyers, printers, merchants a narrow slice of the population. And the whole country rose up anyway. Why? Because they understood something. They were not angry about the money. The rate was low. The revenue was small. But what terrified them was the precedent. For the first time in government they had no voice in, reached directly into their pockets and said, we can tax this. And if we can tax this, we can tax anything. They were right. They fought it. And within a year, the Stamp Act was gone. Now look at Illinois. The state is drowning in debt. It did not come from crypto, not one dollar of it. But when Springfield went looking for revenue, they buried a digital asset privilege tax inside a 1600 page budget. Almost no hearings, almost no debate, 0.2 percent on every transfer, every custody, every move. Not on your profit, but your activity. moving your own coins between your own wallets. Now, ask yourself this. Do you pay a tax when you move shares between brokerage accounts? When you transfer a bond? When your bank holds your money? No. There is no equivalent tax on stocks. None on bonds. None on derivatives. Not in Illinois. Not in any state in America. Only crypto. And it raises $60 million out to be fifty six billion dollar budget. That's a rounding error. So why do it. Because it is a test. And here's why you should care even if you've never owned a single bitcoin in your life. Look at what else was on that same bill. It tax on digital advertising on social media. Springfield did not just come for crypto. It came for technology. It came for the people building things. Illinois has decided that when it needs money it goes hunting for whoever is new, whoever is small, or unpopular enough that nobody will defend them. Today it is a wallet transfer. Tomorrow it is your online business, your platform, your data, your industry, whatever you are building that Springfield does not understand and does not need to protect. That farmer in 1765 never bought a stamp. He stood up anyways because he understood that power used once against someone else is a power that will be used again against him. This is not a crypto fight. This is a question about what kind of state Illinois will be, a state that builds or a state that taxes the builders until they leave. There is already a bill in Springfield to repeal this. It can be stopped, but it does not get stopped by people who assume someone else will handle it. The colonists did not wait. They organized. They made noise, and they made the Stamp Act politically impossible to keep. The amount is not the point, the precedent is.
