There are entire institutions built off of trading this type of data and you're completely blind to it. This is called level three data or message level data and it's printed every single time an order is added, canceled, or even modified. It shows the action that was taken, the side of the order, the price, the size, and the location of the order. The location will read touch if the order was placed at the best bid or offer, or away if it was placed deeper in the order book. We can build an example strategy around this data like this. We start by taking the raw message data that streams in and we transform it into rates of ads or cancels or trades per second. And then we derive two different signals, a momentum signal or a continuation signal and a reversal or exhaustion signal. The momentum signal fires when orders are being added to one side of the book, much more than they're being added to the other side of the book. For example, in the bullish case, we have a bunch of bids flooding in and those drastically outweigh the asks that are flooding in. Then we also filter to make sure that the current spread is tight and that this is a high activity period. Our other signal, which is the reversal signal works like this. Price is stretched up or down in the bullish case when we decide that using a rolling 10 seconds e-score. Let's just think about the bearish case to make this easier. Price is stretched up and then touch bidside cancels are in a burst meaning top of the book touch bidside orders orders to buy or in a cancellation burst meaning they're being cancelled at a rate higher than the 95th percentile over a rolling window of 60 seconds beforehand. So top of the book orders are primarily made by market makers who don't want to have any directional exposure and they don't want to be victims of adverse selection so when a bunch of market makers are canceling orders to buy that suggests that they think the next price move is gonna be down and they don't want a bunch of their bids to be hit on the way down because then they would accrue all of this inventory this long exposure that they don't want. And And the final signal is that add imbalance isn't supporting the move, so we don't have a bunch of bids in this example being added, orders to buy, being added supporting the move upwards. That's the exhaustion component.
